Course Focus

IMI's 3D Printing - Opportunities & Challenges Course provides an introduction to both 3D printing and additive manufacturing. It reviews all of the recognized techniques used and captures the types of materials that can be used or developed. It provides attendee an understanding and an ability to recognize what is possible in the near term and where the limits of the technologies currently are and to appreciate the breakthroughs that maybe necessary to bring about future predictions.

3D printing has caught the world by storm to the extent that it is suggested that the second industrial revolution is underway. 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. It is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes and is unlike traditional techniques, which mostly rely on the removal or subtractive processes of material.

While 3D printing technology has been around since the 1980s, it was not until the early 2010s that the printers became widely available commercially. Since then, there has been a large growth in the sales of these systems and their price has dropped substantially. According to Wohlers Associates, the market for 3D printers and services was worth $2.2 billion worldwide in 2012, up 29% from 2011. McKinsey lists 3D printing as one of the 12 technologies that could drive truly massive economic transformation and disruption in the coming years.

3D printing technology is used for both prototyping and distributed manufacturing with applications in architecture, construction, industrial design, automotive, motorsport, aerospace, military, engineering, dental and medical industries, biotech (human tissue replacement), fashion, footwear, jewelry, eyewear, education, geographic information systems, food, and many other fields.

Understanding the fundamentals is a prerequisite to entering 3D Printing or undertaking any development programs. But assessing and entering the 3D Printing World presents considerable technical challenges and barriers to commercial success. So getting up to speed is not easy. Until now!

IMI's 3D Printing - Opportunities & Challenges Course provides a program and format to get an expert start in 3D Printing, to get an update or to open up new opportunities for successful development.
